Abbotsford

Abbotsford in the Scottish borders is the dramatic creation of Sir Walter Scott and from the deeply impressive baronial grand entrance hall to the glorious formal gardens, it’s a work of fabulous fantasy. Stroll through the armoury stacked with historic guns and swords including Scott’s own blunderbuss, lose yourself in reverie in the dining room where the writer passed away listening to the gentle ripple of the Tweed which it overlooks and tiptoe reventially into Scott’s study where 2000 rare books are housed and where he penned his famous novels. Beyond the crow-stepped gables, towers and turrets are the Walled Gardens where double herbaceous borders dazzle in summer and a little Orangery provides shady retreat from the sun. Potter around the fruit and vegetable beds and then cross the little bridge over the moat through a column of cloister arches into the pretty Morris Gardens.
