You may recognise Scotland’s Blairquhan Castle in Maybole, Ayshire, if you’ve ever seen The Queen, Helen Mirren’s masterful portrayal of Elizabeth II. It was here that the actress wandered the stunning secluded grounds, the gorgeous Regency castellated castle looming in the background. This is the home of the Hunter Blair family, approached along a sweeping three mile drive along the River Girvan ending in a flourish of lime trees designed to establish the grandeur of the property you are about to see. Inside you’ll find a clutch of beautifully designed rooms including a family museum, a 60 foot high saloon, a beautiful old library and a drawing room with views of the river, whose flow was redirected to suit the family. Outside in the lovely grounds, look out for the Ice House and Tree Trail.

Admission: Adult £5.00, Child £3.00, Concession £3.00. Tour and cake included.

Location: A77 south of Ayr, B7023 to Crosshill then, B741 to Straiton, two entrances off B741 to Castle Or B7045 Kirkmichael/Straiton entrance just beyond Kirkmichael.
