Broughton Castle

Broughton, Banbury, Oxfordshire, OX15 5EB

Described by historian Sir Charles Oman back in 1898 as “about the most beautiful castle in all England”, Broughton Castle near Banbury is the sort of fairytale building that tourists flock to the country to see. A glorious combination of Oxfordshire ironstone, moat and sublime gardens, it sits regally amid acres of grounds overlooking a pretty gatehouse and church. Inside you will find The Great Hall, a fascinating melange of fourteenth century stone walls, sixteenth century windows and grand 18th century ceiling, decked out in knights’ armour and wonderful paintings. Wander around the bedrooms slept in by royalty, spot the family facial traits in the portraits in the gallery and imagine feasting under the vaulted ceiling of the dining room with its groined passage. Outside, rose arches, fleur de lys beds and herbaceous borders provide a riot of colour. Think the castle and grounds are familiar? They were the settings for the movies The Madness of King George and Shakespeare In Love.
