This awesome Norman castle sits in a fabulously moody location – built into a basalt outcrop overlooking a usually empty sandy beach on the Northumberland coastline. In fact, its spectacular location made it a contender a few years ago in a poll to find the best view in Britain – it looks across the ocean to the Farne Islands and Holy Island. It has also been the shooting location for the film El Cid and the TV show Blake’s 7. Home to the kings of Northumbria, the castle was the first one in the world to fall to canon fire and it is truly a sight to behold. Former guests have included Queen Mary I and Henry VIII. Inside there are wonderful exhibits ranging from chairs from the coronation of Elizabeth II to a curtain made from old Russian uniforms from the Crimean War, part of the Aviation Artefacts Museum.
