With sweeping views across to the Black Mountains of Wales, it’s no wonder that landscaper du jour Capability Brown choose the site that Berrington Hall now stands on for the great architect Henry Holland to build on. Holland then created the neo-classical Berrington Hall, all the time following his employer Thomas Harley’s commands that the house show just how much money he had made supplying the British army with clothing. The result is a house designed to impress. From the outside, the red sandstone is quite stiff and formal in appearance but the interior is the very opposite, its lavishness and opulence exuding a wonderful warmth. Look out for gorgeous painted ceilings, ornate plaster work and a grand high dome which throws sunlight dramatically onto a spectacular hallway staircase. The dining room is also well worth making a trip to, its giant paintings by Luny depicting Admiral Rodney’s celebrated sea battles. But don’t neglect the downstairs section of the house – there you will be treated to fascinating insights into life as a servant in the laundry, butler’s pantry and beautiful dairy.
