Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle was designed in the 1830s by Sir Charles Barry, who built the Houses of Parliament. In the drawing room are family portraits by Reynolds and Beechey and the smoking room has a magnificent still life by Jan Weenix. Some of the old cellars at Highclere now house the impressive private collection of ancient Egyptian finds amassed from excavations by the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter between 1907 and 1921. An additional gallery of photographs recalls the discovery, in 1922, of the tomb of Tutankhamun, probably the greatest archaeological story ever. The parkland was designed by Capability Brown.
