Forde Abbey & Gardens

Forde Abbey is a Cistercian monastery, founded mid-12th century, and has been a private home since 1543. The buildings seen today almost all existed when the monks departed. The interior was substantially remodelled in 1649-58 by Edmund Prideaux, Cromwell´s Attorney-General. The Grand Saloon displays a complete set of Mortlake tapestries and there are collections of fine furniture, paintings and elaborate plaster ceilings. The large 30 acre garden has herbaceous borders, a bog garden, lakes, statues, rockery and the Centenary fountain, the highest powered fountain in England.
