Hardwick Hall, Gardens & Park
Designed by Robert Smythson for Bess of Hardwick, Hardwick Hall is one of the greatest Elizabethan houses, surviving almost unchanged. The Hall contains one of Europe´s best collections of contemporary furniture, embroideries and tapestries, together with a permanent display of 16th century needlework. In the grounds are the ruins of Hardwick Old Hall, where Bess was born. The house is surrounded by four walled courtyards, an aromatic garden and the famous herb garden. Rare breeds of cattle and sheep can be found in the park. The Stone Centre tells the story of stonemasonry at Hardwick.
