If you’ve a thing for the Arts and Crafts movement, head off to Blackwell overlooking Lake Windermere, a fabulously well preserved example of the style. The house retains almost all of its original features such as the hessian wall-hangings in the dining rooms, the leaf-shaped door handles, the strange little window catches and the gorgeous carved wood panelling. Sit in the fireplace inglenooks and admire the many details that the architects so carefully create to make this large building seem like a family home, from the half-landings and split-level areas to the lovely stained glass plants and flowers. The rooms contain collectable furniture that fits perfectly with their environment, made by leading Arts and Crafts designers such as Morris & Co, CFA Voysey and Ernest Gimson. There is also a changing programme of exhibitions and events.
