Audley End House & Gardens
Audley End House was one of the great wonders of the nation when it was built by Thomas Howard for the first Earl of Suffolk, Lord Treasurer to James I. The property was bought in 1666 by Charles II for £50,000. The 30 rooms display period furnishings and paintings, and some of the interiors were remodelled in the 18th century by Robert Adam. The dining room has a large rare portrait of George II and in the drawing room there are van Goyens and Canalettos. The grounds, including a rose garden and 19th century parterre, were landscaped by Capability Brown.
