Hartland Abbey
Hartland Abbey was built 1157, and was remodelled in Gothic style in the 18th century. It was given by Henry VIII to the Sergeant of his Wine Cellar, whose descendants still live here. Fascinating collections of furniture, porcelain and paintings are on display, and the collection of Victorian and Edwardian photographs show life here as it was in the 19th and 20th centuries. Outside are beautiful 18th century walled gardens with vegetables, borders and rare plants. The woodland gardens are full of camellias and rhododendrons, and in the park are peacocks, donkeys and sheep.
