Alwoodley Golf Club
Alwoodley Golf Club is one of several famous clubs based on the northern stretch of Leeds. It was founded in 1907 and was the first course designed by Dr Alister MacKenzie whose other masterpieces included Augusta National and Cypress Point in America and Royal Melbourne in Australia. Always ranked among Britain’s top 50 courses, it frequently hosts county and national tournaments. It is set on Wigton Moor and springy fairways cut through a profusion of heather and trees. Autumn is a marvellous time to visit because of a breathtaking mix of colours. The course itself features cleverly-planned bunkers bordering undulating and interesting greens. It has staged the British and English ladies’ opens and the English Amateur.
