Situated in seclusion on Surrey’s North Downs, a superb combination of links-like inland golf over heather-strewn land with a wide-open windswept appearance. Started as a nine-hole course in 1897, completed by James Braid 25 years later. Plays 6,702 yards off the back tees to a stiff par 71, the par threes, especially the outstanding 183-yard seventh and the 215-yard 11th, are extremely memorable. The first through a fairway bordered by heather and the last where an under-hit shot spells trouble, are tough 430-yard challenges. For quality, condition, lay-out and perfection, this matches and in many cases betters the leading courses in the locality. Beautifully manicured, excellent true greens but for maximum enjoyment stay out of the thick heather.
