De Vere Slaley Hall
Slaley Hall’s Hunting course designed by Dave Thomas in 1989, has hosted European Tour events and brought status to a county devoid of many major golf venues. A big course with several climbs is carved through a dense pine forest. Seasonal colour comes from rhododendrons and cherry trees that border many interesting holes of the 7,000-yard lay-out, the most notable being the ninth, a 450-yard uphill par four with a stream crossing the fairway at an angle. Thomas bunkers are always a challenge and the streams meandering round the mainly parkland but occasionally moorland holes through the mature pines add to the charm. The second newer Priestman course is more wide open and easier.
