Ganton Golf Club
Golf was first played at Ganton, in the Vale of Pickering between York and Scarborough, in 1891 on a former inlet from the North Sea and the natural sandy subsoil was an ideal place to develop a course. Ganton has hosted a succession of major amateur and professional tournaments for men and women and is the only inland club to have staged the Amateur Championship and has done so three times. Dozens of prestigious amateur events and internationals, including the Ryder Cup in 1949, the Curtis Cup in 2000 and the Walker Cup in 2003 testify to the quality. Deep bunkers and an abundance of gorse planted in the late 1930s helped the course evolve. Many famous personalities dot the club’s history, including Harry Vardon who was the professional when he won the first three of his six Open championships and US Open trophy in 1900.
