Royal Porthcawl Golf Club
Royal Porthcawl, founded in 1891, ranks firmly among the world's top golf courses, a reputation sustained by the many prestigious professional and amateur events held there. The first four holes and the last six are true links, but the holes in the middle rise to an area of gorse and heather where there are superb views across the Bristol Channel. The bunkers are penal, some of the slopes on the greens are severe and the par threes demand precision. There is not a weak hole on the course. The 18th with a downhill second shot and out of bounds can be a disaster as Tiger Woods discovered when he lost to Gary Wolstenholme in the 1995 Walker Cup.
