Woodhall Spa Golf Club
The Hotchkin course dating from the early 1900s is a heathland masterpiece but a severe test. The lasting memory is of the cavernous bunkers that are serious card wreckers that first appear on the gentler opening first hole and are especially prominent at all the par threes, notably the delightful fifth and 12th holes. It is necessary to plot your way round a variety of holes on a sand-based course lined with trees and covered with heather and gorse. Well designed with a natural feel, well-maintained, full of charm and a championship course owned and regularly used by the English Golf Union whose headquarters are nearby. The second course, called the Bracken, was designed by Donald Steel in 1998, is also very playable on similar attractive terrain.
