Gullane Golf Club (No 1)

No 1, the prime course of the three at Gullane, spanning 6,466 yards, par71, was designed by Willie Park in 1884, although golf was played over the spectacular stretch of the rugged East Lothian coast alongside the Firth of Forth from 1650. The views are stunning. The fairways are perfect, but there are many awkward stances on hilly sandy ground, with uphill and downhill holes to test stamina, especially in the wind. The penal rough adds to a stern and demanding test. Both the sharp elevation changes and the weather play such a significant role to scoring. Reach the seventh tee at Gullane Hill and the view to the green far below and the distant sea is overwhelming. With fast greens, deep, riveted bunkers this is an exposed natural links steeped in quality and history.
