Woburn Golf & Country Club (Duke's)

The first course at Woburn was named after the Duke of Bedford, owner of the house and estate, and fashioned through the parkland by Charles Lawrie of Cotton & Pennink. It grew in stature and the first professional event was the Dunlop Masters in 1979. The fairways are flanked by pine, birch and chestnut trees, and each hole is played in splendid isolation. It measures almost 7,000 yards from the back tees so straight, long driving is vital. The feature hole is the 125-yard third, framed by rhododendrons and gorse, the green is 100 feet below the tee, and the hard green slopes sharply from back to front. Very tight and demanding.
