Woburn Golf & Country Club (Duchess)

The Duchess, the shortest course at Woburn but the beautiful pine wood surroundings really make it one of the most picturesque. Tight narrow fairways through pine trees put a premium on straight hitting. Although it has not had as much exposure, it sits comfortably with the other two courses. Designed by Charles Lawrie, it opened in 1979, measures 6,651 yards and is tighter than the Duke’s. A full repertoire of shots is essential to find the small greens in regulation and the driver can be used sparingly. The 203-yard seventh is guarded by a huge bunker while an historic ridge – the remains of an ancient Danish settlement – runs diagonally across the hole and will push anything short and left into the forest.
