The Turnberry (Ailsa)
The Turnbury Ailsa course with superb views across to the Isles of Arran, Turnberry, with its distinctive and imposing hotel and lighthouse, is a delight. Unusually for a links course, there are virtually no dunes protecting holes four to 11 which all run close to the sea and which are noted for their superb views. The Open Championship course twice came close to being lost when it was used as an air base in both World Wars but Mackenzie Ross was given the task of returning it to its former glory. In 1977, the Ailsa course hosted its first of three Opens the duel in the sun between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson. The signature hole is the par four ninth, Bruce's Castle, which involves a drive over the sea and rugged shoreline to a blind fairway with the famous lighthouse and Robert the Bruce's ruined castle in the background.
