Achnacloich garden
The woodland gardens at Achnacloich overlook Loch Etive, with Ben Cruachan eastwards and the Island of Mull westwards. The 19th century walled garden, terraces and three small ponds are a fine setting for late 1820s Scots pine. Serious planting began in 1952, with rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, a growing eucryphia collection and varieties of trees and shrubs - many from the Southern hemisphere. Best viewed spring to end June with attractive woodland walks in summer months and good autumn colours. Working single-handed for 20 years, Charlie Milne, the gardener has been able to cut out the ponticum rhododendrons as all the planting can now provide the necessary shelter.
