Bobby and Betty Masterton created 2.4 hectare Cluny House Gardens out of a few conifers, beech trees and oaks when they arrived in the 1950s and the result you see today is a magical North American woodland setting in which you’ll find some of Perthshire’s most fascinating plants and wildlife. This lovely Scottish attraction, which overlooks the Strathtay Valley, is also home to two giant 150-year-old Wellingtonias, one of them Britain’s widest conifer which has a girth of 11 metres. The Mastertons were very interested in Himalayan plants which now, happily, thrive in the gardens and are now cared for, along with the rest of this floral treat, by the Masterton’s daughter Wendy and husband John Mattingley. Look out for the Tibetan cherry tree and its mahogany peeling bark plus some gorgeous flourishing perennials such as lilies and blue poppies, exotic arisaemas, skunk cabbages and copious numbers of candelabra primulas.
