West Dean, Chichester, West Sussex, PO18 0RX
West Dean Gardens is one of the greatest gardens open to the public in England. Creatively inspired by its rich heritage and South Downs setting, the gardens include a Walled Kitchen Garden, Sunken Garden (winner of the Sussex Heritage Trust's Gardens and Landscape Award 2014) and houses some of the finest Victorian glasshouses in the country. Extensive and richly planted grounds include a stunning 300 foot Edwardian Pergola, and the 50 acre arboretum accessed by a beautiful two mile parkland walk.
The gardens surround a 19th century flint mansion, West Dean College, which also offers short courses, accommodation, private dining and conferences. Wedding receptions in a marquee for up to 200 guests can be held in West Dean Gardens with the stunning backdrop of the South Downs. An exciting annual programme of art and craft courses, talks and events such as the Chilli Fiesta and Visit Father Christmas also feature in the grounds.
West Dean Gardens is part of the following Travel Ideas:
"The first thing that strikes you about West Dean gardens is how utterly immaculate they are, and the kitchen garden and glasshouses are no exception. The classic Victorian layout contains everything from perennial veg such as artichoke and seakale to espaliered fruit trees and herbs. The old cutting patch is now filled with flowers in ‘hot’ colours – red, orange and yellow. Inspirational."
