Just four miles south-east of the pretty market town of Shrewsbury, Repton-designed Attingham Park Gardens is a gorgeous place to take a stroll whatever the season, with its groves of Lebanon cedars, towering trees and copious shrub land. Pull on those walking shoes and take a hardy yomp through the stunning deer park where 200 fallow deer roam freely (in the winter, the animals are fed at 2pm on weekends and daily in the Christmas and half term holidays, except Dec 25) or head off and see the historic listed bee house where the inhabitants are kept in old style straw skeps. Waterside walks, teeming with wildlife, are also in abundance here as there are five miles of river to navigate within the gardens, with lovely parts of the Severn and the Tern to explore. Look out for otters, ducks, swans and dragonfly on your travels. In spring, carpets of daffodils dazzle along pathways with rhododendrons and azaleas flashing their colours as summer unfolds. Come autumn, American thorns and dogwoods take centre stage. Don’t miss the wonderful walled garden too, built in 1780 to provide food for the stately Attingham Park.
