Hinton Ampner House garden

The gardens of Hinton Ampner House were laid out by the scholarly Ralph Dutton in the middle of the 20th century with great regard to line, landscape and historical propriety. Statues, buildings, axes and views have been placed with exquisite judgement to lead you subtly along the exact route that Dutton intended. He was also careful to choose plants which would do well on chalk, and then plant lots of them - using always the best forms, among them are buddlejas, lilacs, philadelphus, cotoneasters, weigelas and shrub roses. It is now one of England“s best mid-20th century gardens, maintained to a high specification.
