The Castle & Gardens of Mey
The Castle & Gardens of Mey was owned by the Queen Mother who bought the Castle of Mey in 1952 and every year from 1955 to 2001 spent August and part of October at the Castle until her death in 2002. The walled garden had been much neglected and over a period of time Her Majesty created a traditional, Scottish, walled garden with vegetables, fruit and herbaceous plants. Many of her favourite roses remain, particularly in the Shell Garden, a small part of the walled garden where the Queen Mother would sometimes sit with the corgis enjoying the sun. There is also the East Garden, where in August a large round bed of primulas can be found in the woods.
