Discover Myddelton House Gardens

The former family seat of the Parker-Bowles family, Mydellton House Gardens is a celebration of the self-taught horticulturalist. Created by the Edward Augustus “Gussie' Bowles back in back in the late 1800s, the garden became a celebrated destination and received thousands of visitors from all over the country before its decline in the 20th century (when it became obscured by layers of ivy and bramble) and subsequent recent restoration. Bowles seemed to have a magic touch for creating wonderful flora and was dubbed the Crocus King for the fabulous spring blooms he splashed across the estate. Highlights of the site, now that it has been fully revived and brought back to its former glory, include The Stone Garden created using the trunk of a fossilised tree found during the excavation of the King George V reservoir at Chingford with a mounting block from the village blacksmith, The New River (originally 38 miles long and bringing fresh water from Ware in Herts to Clerkenwell), The Alpine Meadow inspired by Bowles’ plant hunting holidays in the Pyrenees and a sea of snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and camassias and The Rock Garden (where each rock was laid by Bowles personally). Don’t miss the pretty pond where locals were used to seeing Bowles in his blue and white striped Edwardian bathing suit and straw boater pulling up blanket weed and the Market Cross, once the Enfield Market Cross until 1904 when Bowles rescued it from a builder’s yard and placed it as the centre piece of his rose garden.

Review of Myddelton House Gardens

Posted on by Ishea BCustomer visited Jun 2012

We found this little gem on a cloudy day in June 2012 and were totally surprised in a very good way by the atmosphere, plants and size of Myddelton House and all for free!

Would thoroughly recommend a visit - you dont feel like your in reach of London and is a great respite from the chaos!

Enjoy, we will be going again.

Peace out.
