Discover the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement

One of West Londons hidden gems, Chiswick house is a classic example of beautiful 18th century British architecture. The Londoners have been seeking sanctuary in these lovely grounds for years and it’s not hard to see why. Known to be to be the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement; the wonderful Roman-style Palladian villa was inspired by the Earl of Burlington’s grand tour of Italy who wanted the grounds to have the feel of a landscape painting with grand vistas. In subsequent years, the owner opted for a freer, more luscious, less formal approach where curves and clusters replaced straight lines and linear designs. Natural spaces with sculptures and architectural flourishes like the Ionic temple and the Doric column characterise the gardens these days, making this a serene, beautiful place to stroll. Meander down the sloping lawn to the artificial river then take in the views of the bordering parkland.

"The birthplace of the English Landscape Movement, Chiswick House Gardens has been renovated after decades of neglect and is now home to some fabulous vistas, great design and just gorgeous statuary and garden buildings. Some of the highlights of the new look gardens include the planting of 1,600 trees (including some propagated from the original 18th century Lebanon cedars), restoration of the 19th century conservatory housing some rare camellias, the planting of native trees and shrubs from the Northern Wilderness and the restoration of the walled gardens. The new café, on the east side of the house, provides a social hub for visitors and there’s a terrific new playground for the kids too."
