Lowthwaite is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, only three miles from Ullswater with views of Helvellyn and Blencathra. We, Jim and Tine, have fully renovated the house to make a lovely family home and a place where our guests can feel welcome and at home. We are the only remaining dwelling in the hamlet of Lowthwaite, and guests have often described the place as a 'haven of peace and tranquillity'. We have four beautiful and differently styled bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.
Our food is homemade and delicious, mostly made from local and/or organic ingredients, and there is something for everybody, whether it is a Traditional English, a stack of pancakes or just some freshly baked bread with our homemade jams. Last, but not least, we do our best to make our guests feel at home and try to work by the motto 'nothing is too much trouble'.

| Local directions: | To find us from Junction 40 on the M6 is easy. Take A66 towards Keswick for 6.5 miles, then turn left opposite B5288 onto the Matterdale road. Head down into the valley for 1.25 miles and then turn left immediately after Walloway Farm, signposted to Thackthwaite and Dacre. Go uphill for 0.25 mile and then fork right signposted “Lowthwaite 1”. We are nearly one mile from this junction nestling in a hollow, the only house on the left side of this road, and the only remaining dwelling in the hamlet of Lowthwaite. If you come from Keswick, just follow the description from A66, but turn right when you get to B5288. To find us from the main A592 Ullswater lakeshore road is nearly as easy. Take A5091 to Dockray village and continue for 1.0 mile before turning right at Matterdale church, signposted to Penruddock. Continue for 1.0 mile, ignoring the right turn to Ulcat Row, until reaching a T junction. Turn right and proceed up the hill for 0.25 mile until arriving at the left turn signposted 'Lowthwaite 0.25'. We are the first inhabited house that you pass on the right side of this road, and the only remaining dwelling in the hamlet of Lowthwaite. If you choose to take another route, we recommend that you have a good map, as the network of small lanes can be confusing. |
