It developed as a fishing port and also for a time a whaling port. Its most famous sailor and explorer was Capt James Cook who set sail from the port on his voyages of discovery. Today the town has a lot to offer the many visitors, including a clean sandy beach, many cafes, pubs and also fish and chip shops. High of the cliffs above the town is the ruins of Whitby Abbey which is open to the public.
