Often described as a definitive English garden, Hestercombe Gardens is a gorgeous mix of three centuries of design and the result is a glorious site that welcomes walkers (and their dogs) all year round. The landscape garden is Georgian, the work of 18th century designer Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, while the terrace and shrubbery are Victorian creations. At the turn of the century, however, Edwardian garden design dominated as Sir Edward Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll remodelled and expanded upon the brilliant work already achieved. History aside, what you have here is a blissful place to wander through the seasons, with little woodland walks, pretty ponds and lakes and 18th century pavilions sited to provide divine English countryside views. Amazing to think that just a few decades ago this precious 40-acre Somerset spot filled with lakes, temples and woodland walks was derelict and overgrown. Parents should direct the kids to the restored 17th century watermill with working flour mill and apple press and the play area. There are also seasonal trails for children.
