Highlands before agricultural improvement, the Highland Clearances and crofting. Townships like this were the norm in 1760, were dropping in numbers by 1810, and were rare by 1860. When Queen Victoria visited Auchindrain in 1875, it was to be shown 'the primitive village'. By the time the last tenant retired in 1962, Auchindrain was the only township to remain substantially unaltered by improvement or abandonment. Auchindrain has been open to the public as a museum since 1968. The 25-acre site is a Conservation Area, is Category A listed in its entirety, and its buildings are a Recognised Collection of historical and cultural importance to Scotland.
