Pretty Bala, with its Georgian-style main street, is a hub of activity come the spring and summer months as tourists arrive to see Lake Bala, the biggest natural lake in Wales at 6.5km long and 1.5km wide. Potter along its length on the steam narrow gauge Bala Lake Railway, whose 15km journey gives you plenty of time to admire the wildlife and woodland scenery of Snowdonia National Park’s Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy mountains. Start your day at the railway HQ at Llanuwchllyn just south of the town. Here you can see the steam engines being serviced and coupled and see the railway’s other engines in their sheds. For nostalgia buffs, kids and countryside lovers, this is a hard act to follow.
