Busy, tourist-heavy Edinburgh can feel a little claustrophobic after a while so it's a nice idea to hop on the bus from Princes Street and head out to the 33 acres of parkland that is Edinburgh Zoo. Many make a beeline for the zoo just for the Emperor Penguins who parade Happy-Feet style each afternoon over the zoo lawns in pursuit of their keeper and his fishy treats. One of them, super bizarrely, is an actual colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian Army (we are not making this up). But in fact, there are 1,000 animals to see including all the usual suspects such as giraffes, lions, tigers, chimps, crocodiles, gorillas and rhinos plus more unusual creatures such as Blue Frogs, whose poisonous skin Colombian tribes use to make arrowheads. The zoo is on a steep incline but there’s a free hilltop safari train to take the strain.
Edinburgh Zoo is part of the following Editors' Picks:
Top Ten Easter Attractions for Families by Kathryn Miller
"With more than 1,000 animals, including the UK’s only pair of giant pandas, the UK’s only koala bears, two Asian lions, two Amur leopards, black howler monkeys, swamp wallabies and two Sumatran tigers, plus numerous birds and insects, it’s no wonder the Scottish capital’s Zoo is a year-round favourite. Our tip: don’t miss the animal encounter session at 1pm where you can meet some of the Zoo’s less well-known residents. This Easter children can paint their own Easter egg on Easter Sunday, March 31, from 11am-3pm."
10 Places for a Romantic Rendezvous in Edinburgh by Natalie French
"There is something quite weird about a whole nation’s obsessing with copulating pandas. But then again, everyone loves a good ‘will they, won’t they?’ storyline. Sent on loan from China, on a ten-year conservation programme, the two Giant Pandas have an annual 36-hour window to ‘get it on’. Although there was some definite flirting going on last time, Yang Guang failed to get Tian Tian pregnant – so the love story continues... Join hoards of people for a peek of what looks remarkably like two people in panda-suits, as they chomp their way through a small forest of bamboo – a surreal, but entertaining experience. And who knows, next year there may be the first pitter patter of Scottish baby panda feet."
