JORVIK Viking Centre

The Jorvik Viking Centre pretty much has every cough and spit on what those rather uncouth chaps got up to 1000 years ago – and why shouldn’t it, since the centre is built on the very site where 40,000 Viking artefacts were discovered by archeologists. But this is no dusty old museum. Instead, climb into a vibrating time machine-like lift which takes you back to the year 975 when York was the Viking town of Jorvik. Exit the lift, pop into a pod and allow yourself to be ferried through domestic and civic scenes of Viking life – smells included. Kids particularly like the illnesses and diseases exhibit plus an explanation of typical Viking battle injuries and weapons they used. Utterly absorbing.
