Twycross Zoo is well known for its 50 acres of parkland and more than 1000 animals. Whether you want to sing with the howler monkeys, go slow with the Aldabra tortoise or chatter with the Derbyan parakeets, there are enough residents here to keep you busy all day. But this attraction has lots more besides. There’s a wetland trail that takes you on a journey through important local wildlife habitats, a gallery featuring the work of local sculptors, ceramicists, painters and jewellery makers and a great visitor centre and diner called Himalaya where you can lunch while looking out onto Himalayan snow leopards. Don’t miss the Elephant Walkways, an Asian-themed trail and bridge over the elephants’ bathing pool which the kids always adore. They’ll also get a real kick from the Dinosaur Valley attraction where 15 life size animatronic monsters roam about causing mayhem. The valley leads to a trail through prehistoric times where you’ll encounter brachiosaurs, t-rexes and the feathered citipati. Awesome.

Twycross Zoo is part of the following Editors' Picks:

Five of the Best Animal Attractions by William Gray

"This is the place to go for visiting your distant hairy cousins. A breeding centre for all kinds of endangered primates, from bonobos and gorillas to orang-utans and lemurs, Twycross blends monkey business with serious conservation. Don’t miss the gibbons which, if you’re lucky, will whoop themselves into a singing frenzy, the black siamangs using their balloon-like throat pouches to amplify their extraordinary calls."
