It’s a mark of how much there is to see and do at Blenheim that many locals in Woodstock and around buy annual passes so that they can return time and time again. The palace, an 18th century English Baroque confection of a building, is simply stuffed with tapestries, paintings, sculptures and furniture so sumptuous that you swear on the spot never to visit IKEA again. The site’s history stretches back to the 1500s when there was a hunting lodge on the grounds where Queen Elizabeth I was jailed for a year prior to her accession to the throne. And as if that wasn’t enough, of course, it’s also the childhood home of Sir Winston Churchill and it makes the hairs on your neck stand on end to pause and reflect in the bedroom where he was born in 1874, all the period features faithfully on show. Blenheim has a perfectly wonderful running calendar of events in the grounds too, including Family Days, kids’ quizzes, falconry displays and jousting events. There’s also a butterfly park in the grounds.
