Lincoln Cathedral

You’ll see Lincoln Cathedral from 25 miles away as you approach this gorgeous historic little city and the closer you get, the more impressive it becomes. Looming over the flatlands of the county, this is possibly one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in Europe. Free tours give you a fascinating insight into its history from William the Conqueror’s edict to have it built onwards but even if you don’t sign up for one, there’s plenty to see – the awesome West Front (which is floodlit spectacularly at night) and its 12th century Romanesque frieze of scenes from heaven and hell, the medieval rose windows and the pulpitum screen with its glorious 14th century stone carvings. And don’t forget to look out for the Lincoln imp who, according to legend, was a little devil turned to stone by angels after causing chaos in the cathedral. You can spy him in the Angel Choir overlooking St Hugh’s shrine.
