Cumbria Tourism Sustainable Tourism Award Winner Ullswater ‘Steamers’ have been sailing on England’s most beautiful lake since 1859. Renamed the ‘Dark Lake’ in Arthurian legend, and inspiration for famous artists and writers such as William Wordsworth, Ullswater still holds many a secret and today is home to a rich biodoversity of species including Englands last remaining wild Red Deer Herd in England that dates back to William the Conqueror. It is unique in the Lake District, having been created by three separate glaciers; its distinct reaches and dog-legs wind a serpentine course through the surrounding landscape, with Helvellyn at 3,117ft (950m) crowning the head of the lake. The ‘Steamers’ create the perfect opportunity to combine a cruise with some of the most famous and spectacular walks in the Lake District.
