There’s something rather lovely about standing on a raised deck and proffering some foliage up to a giraffe to devour on a Wednesday morning in Dalton-In-Furness - it sort of makes you feel like you’ve elevated yourself from the daily grind. Other special moments at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park? Handing some penguins their lunch (you can do this every day), staring at the bears as they eye you suspiciously from their enclosure and attempting to cure my snake phobia with a handling session (didn’t work). The talks on giraffe and rhino conservation are also excellent. On the last Sunday of the month, there are Kids Zoo Club sessions where keepers focus on one particular animal and explain more about how they live. Added bonuses include the mini train ride and the children’s play area. The park is also good at seasonal events so expect spooky goings on at Hallowe’en and a Santa-tastic Christmas display.
